Sports, Fitness and Recreation helps youth develop fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills. The following programs aim to increase Fitness and promote social health.
Tennis Center
The tennis program exposes youth 6-17 years old to a sport that enhances individual developmental skills, builds character, enhances perception and promotes healthy attitudes. It also helps to build strength, flexibility and endurance. Participants of the Los Angeles Youth Tennis (LAYT) program receive instruction from certified tennis professionals, qualify for membership with SCTA, receive a certificate of participation, participate in various special events, receive awards and participate in tournaments.
Nike Go
Challengers Boys & Girls Club is increasing physical activity, fitness education and overall health of youth through the NikeGO program. Because kids' lives are more sedentary than in the past, Nike, as a leading sports and fitness company, created programs that "promote physical activity and increase awareness and understanding of appropriate physical activity levels for kids." NikeGO's mission and goal is to get kids moving for at least 30 minutes at a time, several times a week.
Youth participate in activities such as Basketball Leagues, Dance Dance Revolution (a popular PlayStation game to demonstrate dance moves), golf, volleyball and the NikeGO Run Club. "The NikeGO program has been a rewarding and successful addition to our sports and fitness program," says unit director Nate Wilson. "Through Nike, we have introduced a wider variety of activities in which youth who are a bit timid about participating in some of the traditional programs feel more comfortable and willing to join. Our members and Parents' participation has increased tremendously since we've been a part of the NikeGO initiative." The NikeGO program ensures that every child feels successful and has fun while participating in physical activity.
